      About return prices

      Return prices are filtered by whether the ticket may come back on the day you choose, not by the time you travel back. The journey out is checked properly, peak rules included, but the way home is not planned - so the cheapest return here is a lower bound, and coming home in the morning peak can cost several times more.

      Where a ticket has such a condition, it is shown under the price in the operator's own words - "no arrival into London before 11:30", and the like.

      The any train back options price the cheapest round trip that carries no condition on the way home, so the journey back cannot invalidate it. It is usually a good deal more: Euston to Manchester is £114.00 off-peak and £386.00 any time.

      Far fewer places have one - about 1,000 of York's 2,578, not all of them. That is not the map being strict. Most destinations have no return ticket at all and are priced as two singles, and only the cheapest single is held here - so where that one carries a time restriction, an unrestricted single may well exist and cannot be quoted from what this map knows.

      Every return price is listed rather than only the cheapest, because the range is the honest answer - the cheapest is one end of it.

      About the prices shown

      Each price is the cheapest walk-up fare valid on the journey for the quickest trip. Cheaper tickets to the same place often exist but are tied to one operator or a different route, so using them means travelling differently - for example York to King's Cross is £70.70 on Grand Central, rather than the £172.50 any-permitted-route fare. Advance fares are normally much cheaper, but are not shown here, as current price varies for each train time. The price displayed is the most you should expect to pay rather than the best available.
